Evolution of closed depression in Kochanów (central Poland)

The deposits which filled an elongated, extraglacial depression at Kochanów were described. The depression came into being during the Warta ice sheet deglaciation. The deepest part of the depression was occupied by a block of dead ice and after its melting by a lake. The author analysed deposits filling up the lake basin and a dry valley associated with it.
On the base of grain size distribution, mineralogical and chemical composition, and mechanical abrasion of material seven stratigraphical units were distinguished. Character of malacological remnants, genetic features, stratigraphic position of the deposits and their correlation with those derived from other sites in the region, dated by radiocarbon method, enabled to determine the age of the particular parts of the series.
The lake was dozen or so metres deep; during the Eemian Interglacial (I) calcareous gyttia and later (II) lacustrine chalk accumulated in it. Within the Vistulian series the author distinguished following units: (III) sandy-gravelly littoral sediment, (IV) fine grained slope sediment, (V) coarse grained slope sediment, (VI) sandy and sandy-silty aeolian cover sediment, and finally (VII) recent deluvial sediment.
The lake disapeared entirely during the Late Plenivistulian (ca. 20-15 ka BP). Two stages in the development of periglacial phenomena were found. They confirm the conception of bicyclic evolution of the environment in Middle Poland during the Vistulian age.
