Abstrakt

Pośmiertna publikacja „prezydenckiego przesłania” (Presidential Address), które Goffman przygotował jako przewodniczący Amerykańskiego Towarzystwa Socjologicznego (ASA) [Goffman 1983] zapewniła, że jego spuścizna będzie rozpoznawana jako socjologia ładu interakcyjnego. Jednak to, jak dokładnie 11 książek i liczne artykuły, składające się na jego naukowy dorobek, były ze sobą powiązane, pozostaje zagadką. Wobec braku wyraźnego dążenia do kumulacji lub widocznej chęci ze strony Goffmana do ujawnienia uporządkowania swoich prac, komentatorzy podjęli wiele prób zrekonstruowania jego twórczości. Milczenie Goffmana w tej kwestii zostało przerwane przez odkrycie listu Goffmana do Allena Daya Grimshawa (1929-2011), profesora socjologii na Uniwersytecie Indiany w Bloomington w USA. W artykule omówione zostają istotne fragmenty tego listu, a stworzona tam przez Goffmana konstrukcja jego całościowego dzieła oceniana jest w świetle jego własnych zastrzeżeń, nawołujących do sceptycyzmu wobec tego, co autorzy mówią czytelnikom o swojej pracy.
