Abstract

Article in French.

ORIGINAL TITLE: Cartes de morphologie périglaciaire quaternaire en Europe

In the Quaternary, the extent of periglacial landforms was much greater than today; the permafrost line was 24° lower in latitude. The main landforms are the result of frost action (solifluction flows, layered rock debris, etc.) and wind action (loess or wind-blown sands). Frost wedge crevasses extend further south than other landforms, while layered sediments are more westerly. Areas of glacial relief, including the Scandinavian Peninsula, were covered by ice, sheltered from the influence of this last phase of periglacial activity, which are now limited to high altitudes and high latitudes.
