ORIGINAL TITLE: Du chaud Tertiaire aux froids Quaternaires: les pourcentages de galets de quartz

In the countries of central Europe, the Oligo-Miocene deposits are rich in quartz and poor in feldspar grains and in granite and gneiss pebbles. Interpretation: predominance of chemical weathering in soils, in a hot and humid climate under forest, similar to today in French Guiana. In contrast, the Riss and Würm deposits are, on average, much richer in feldspars and in pebbles of granite, gneiss, etc. Interpretation: predominance of frost-induced fracturing and other mechanical agents. Between the two, the azoic gravels of Donau–Gunz–Villafranchian age are very rich in blocks and pebbles of quartzites and in quartz. Interpretation: the first cold periods modify the older Tertiary soils. They spread them mainly laterally. Interpretation: the sea level, before the first glaciations, was 50 to 60 meters higher than today, the valleys less deeply incised, and the topography flatter.
