Frost fissures in loess deposits

The author distinguished two types of crack structures in the loess cover that formed as a result of thermal contraction: structures with secondary seasonal infilling, corresponding to the ascending phase of the Würm glaciation, and structures with secondary infilling that developed in two stratigraphic levels of the full Würm phase — one in the older part and the other in the younger part. Crack structures with secondary seasonal infilling developed only in the active layer of the permafrost. Cracks caused by thermal contraction appeared in autumn and were immediately filled with water, which then froze inside them. In spring, during the melting of the ice, material from the crack walls and the surface migrated toward the lower parts of the cracks. This process was repeated many times. Crack structures with secondary infilling developed both in the active layer and within the permafrost itself. The ice within cracks in the permafrost formed over a relatively long period of time. As the upper boundary of the permafrost gradually lowered, the ice in the cracks melted, and, at that time, material from the immediate surroundings of the cracks collapsed into their inner parts under the force of gravity.
