Abstract

Background: The article analyses Auberon Herbertʼs concept of voluntarism in the context of 19th-century liberal thought.
Research purpose: The aim of the article is to answer the question of whether the political system envisaged by Auberon Herbert, which is entirely devoid of coercion, is possible.
Method: Contextualism. Historical analysis of philosophical texts.
Conclusions: Herbertʼs concept is more of a philosophical manifesto than a viable political project.
