ORIGINAL TITLE: La famille du mot “périglaciaire”
The author examines the origin, evolution, and usage of the term “periglacial” in Earth sciences, writing in response to the Periglacial Geomorphology Commission’s inquiry of the International Geographical Union. Hamelin argues that, despite its imperfections, the term remains the most suitable for describing processes and features in cold regions. He discusses its semantic development, competing lexical roots such as cryo, géli, and nivo, and proposes a systematic classification of related and derivative expressions. The paper provides a linguistic framework for standardising periglacial terminology and enhancing precision in geomorphological language.
