Abstract

The paper is a critique of the current, widely used classifications of periglacial phenomena, which focus on physical mechanisms and neglect geological context. To make the divisions more useful for paleogeographic reconstructions, a new classification based on the origin of sediments has been proposed, with two main groups: subaquatic (accumulated in the water) and subaerial (accumulated on land). A detailed classification is presented in the table. Based on example of Central Yakutia the facies characteristics of sediments are shown to be as important as climatic zonation in terms of the formation of specific forms.
