The interpretation of fossil traces of periglacial environments requires the application of detailed analysis and a standarized research methodology. Accordingly, a procedural framework for the analytical examination of fossil contraction frost-fissures has been developed, taking into account their significance for reconstructing origin and palaeogeographical interpretation. The study is complemented by a classification of Pleistocene frost ice-wedge structures.
