ORIGINAL TITLE: Mares et lacs ronds et loupes de glace du sol
Circular lakes and mares have been documented in a wide range of regions, including Scania, Denmark, Holstein, the north-eastern Netherlands, Norfolk, Belgium, Lorraine, the areas surrounding Paris and Bordeaux, the coast of New Jersey, the border region of North Dakota–Manitoba–Saskatchewan, and parts of Siberia. Their diameters range from 5 to over 1000 metres, with the most common sizes being between 30 and 50 metres. These features typically exhibit a basin-like profile with a slope that gradually decreases from the edges toward a flat central area. They are predominantly found in clay-sandy soils near temporary or permanent groundwater levels. In some areas, they have been utilised by humans, while in others they have been infilled. In many cases, it has been demonstrated that these depressions correspond to the former locations of periglacial ice-cored mounds (pingo, palsa), or cryokarstic and thermokarstic landforms of Pleistocene age.
