"A Tree So Unhappy…" About the Idea of Categorization in Folk Culture as Exemplified by Aspen

Cultural categories do not emerge as a result of objective observation of reality, but they are components of a picture of the world processed by human senses and culture. They have a social character and do not exist in and for themselves. They are created and transformed by a community, and leave a deep trace in people’s memory and language. Thus, a task of cognitive linguistics is not so much to examine the objective way of existence of the real world established in language, but rather the world experienced and projected by a human as a member of a certain community. This is not easy because categories are more or less free creation of an individual who, out of a chaos of perceptual data, forms his or her world or even a multi-world, because both experience and culture provide the basis for many different interpretations. Hence, it is worth asking a question about the mechanisms of the categorization idea. In the article it is claimed that one of such ideas is anomaly that is a phenomenon which does not fit into a certain standard. Anomalies become the basis for categorization and a source of negative stereotypes. A good example is aspen (Populus tremula) which in the Polish folk culture is a sinful and unhappy tree. It seems that the reason for this cultural stigmatization is that aspen’s leaves tremble incessantly even during windless weather. This feature is unusual for other trees and at the same time the most strongly established in the image of aspen, which is reflected in its names, phraseology, legends and data derived from the level of beliefs and symbols. In the light of the analysed material, aspen appears primarily as a tree that trembles in fear for itself and does not cooperate with the world in the protection of life. It is a symbol of unhappiness, egoism and sin.
