Recent studies of Pleistocene sediments in Western Eurasia necessitate a substantial revision of the concepts of the periglacial zone and periglacial phenomena, emphasising the role of diagenetic, convection and frost-cracking processes rather than solely climatic factors. The interplay of glacio-isostasy, sediment heterogeneity and proglacial water accumulation produced a complex morpho-lithogenetic landscape, challenging the traditional interpretation of wedge- and fold-type disturbances as permafrost-related ice veins. These findings highlight that periglacial environments encompass a broad para-genetic complex of geological, climatic and biological processes, requiring a more integrated approach to reconstructing palaeogeography and understanding sedimentary dynamics.
