Stratigraphy and chronology of the dune at Witów (Łęczyca District)

Archaeological excavations conducted over a four-year period at Witów led to the identification of three cultural assemblages: a Tardenoisian, a Świderian and a distinct "Witówian" complex, each embedded within different stratigraphic layers of the dune. Notably, the latter cultural unit has not yet been recorded at other Polish archaeological sites. The presence of organic layers beneath the dune and at its top allowed for the chronological placement of the dune's formation within the timeframe extending from the end of the Bølling interstadial to the beginning of the Subatlantic period. The dune is intersected by a palaeosoil horizon, within the upper part of which artefacts attributed to the "Witówian" culture were found. This horizon also yielded charcoal fragments, which were radiocarbon dated (C14) to the end of the Allerød period and to approximately 10,855 ± 160 years BP. These findings suggest that the earlier phase of the Witów dune dates back to the Lower Dryas. Comparable results were obtained from studies conducted at dune sites in Rissen 14 (near Hamburg) and Usselo in the Netherlands.
