Abstract

Article in French.

ORIGINAL TITLE: Le thermokarst

Thermokarst is a phenomenon of ground subsidence caused by the thawing of frozen rocks or fossil ice. The distribution and amount of ice in the substrate determine the shape of thermokarst landforms. Shallow thermokarst forms develop in southern regions, where the number of ice layers and veins in the ground decreases with depth. In northern regions – areas of permafrost occurrence where ice layers and veins are evenly distributed at great depths – large, deep thermokarst forms are created during ground thawing and subsidence.

An increase in temperature is not the only factor influencing the development of thermokarst. This process can also occur under harsh continental climatic conditions.
