The distribution of periglacial phenomena in NW-Sörkapp, Spitsbergen

During consecutive summer seasons (1957–59), the author conducted observations in the north-western part of Sørkapp, focusing on periglacial microrelief and certain morphogenetic processes characteristic of present-day periglacial environments. A number of cross-sections enhanced our understanding of such phenomena as: stone circles, frost-crack polygons and stone polygons, striped soils, solifluction lobes, stone fields, exposed rock walls, frost-induced grooves, interstitial ice mounds, and stratified scree. An attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of frost weathering and the rate of solifluction. Analysis of the distribution of periglacial forms and phenomena in north-western Sørkapp showed that their occurrence depends primarily on: the nature of the pre-existing landforms, lithology, the character of debris, and local climatic and hydrographic conditions. This analysis further allowed the identification of two distinct zones: (1) the eastern zone, where morphogenetic processes are more intense and periglacial microforms occur more frequently, and (2) the western zone, where such microforms are slightly less common and morphogenetic activity is less vigorous. Finally, a detailed map presents the distribution of all observed periglacial phenomena in the north-western part of Sørkapp.
