Loess stratigraphy in Poland with special emphasis on the last cold stage

Five loess horizons separated by fossil soils occur in Poland. In the terrains which were outside of·the Odra stage the loesses overlie chiefly the Cracovian (Mindel) boulder clay, whose top part was strongly weathered and decalcified most likely during the Great Interglacial. The oldest horizon - lower Older Loess - was deposited during the Odra stage. It occurs on the Lublin Upland and in the border zone of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, being absent from the Sudetes foreland invaded by the ice-sheet of the Odra stage.
In the top of the lower Older Loess the fossil soil lessivé of the Tomaszów type developed. It is referred by the present author to the Odra-Warta Interstadial.
Upwards, there is the upper Older Loess from the Warta stage. On the .Lublin Upland and in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains foreland this horizon forms continuous covers, while in the Sudetes foreland - only small patches less than 1 m in thickness.
In its top part there is a well-developed soil complex of the Nietulisko I type, whose lower part - soil lessivé - came into being during the E'emian Interglacial, whereas the upper one - chernozem - originated in the Brorup Interstadial. Both these soils occur in the east part of the Lublin Upland. In the Świętokrzyskie Mountains foreland chernozem overlies the thin and discontinuous cover of the Younger Loess I from the stage separating the Amersfoort from the Brørup.
The Younger Loess Ila and IIb originated in the climax of the last cold age both in eastern and western Poland. The lithologie properties of the older of these two horizons, i.e. of the Youriger Loess IIa, as well as periglacial disturbances in this horizon provide evidence that it originated in a rather humid climate. Of all loess horizons the Younger Loess IIb is the thickest. Its accumulation was rapid and took place under severe cold and dry climatic conditions. At the same time numerous frost-fissure polygons and injection structures were formed.
These two youngest loess horizons are separated by the fossil soil of the Komorniki type, strongly differentiated: brown arctic, gley (pseudogley) or boggy soil from the cold and humid interstadial. This soil constitutes a time counterpart of the Denekamp and Hengelo Interstadials and of the Stillfried B soil.
