Abstract

The article recalls the 19th International Geographical Congress in Stockholm (1960) and the preceding symposium in Abisko, which focused on high mountain geomorphology and glacial and periglacial processes. This symposium was of great importance for the reconstruction of post-war scientific cooperation in Europe, enabling geomorphologists to exchange knowledge and experience. The author emphasises the uniqueness of Abisko as a research area, as aptly put by Jan Dylik. The author focuses on the person of Dylik and his research on the combination of glacial forms and modern periglacial processes. This research has been fundamental to understanding the development of relief in these zones, as well as to the author's scientific development. Nevertheless, questions about the rate and extent of modern periglacial change in the context of a warming climate remain open, providing a field of research for future generations.
