Racjonalne opisy współczesnych gleb peryglacjalnych (takich jak gleby poligonalne, pasy, kręgi kamieniste, kopce ziemne itp.) oraz struktur peryglacjalnych pochodzenia kopalnego (np. krioturbacje) nie pozwalają na odkrycie ani wyjaśnienie mechanizmów odpowiedzialnych za ich powstawanie. Wydaje się, że badania eksperymentalne są predestynowane do odegrania kluczowej roli w rozwiązaniu tego istotnego problemu. Autor zwraca uwagę na główne projekty zrealizowane w tej dziedzinie, zarówno w terenie, jak i w warunkach laboratoryjnych. Podkreśla trudności, z jakimi wiąże się tego rodzaju praca badawcza, oraz wskazuje możliwe kierunki dalszych studiów. Postuluje również powołanie międzynarodowej komisji mającej na celu rozwój i koordynację badań eksperymentalnych.
