Artykuł stanowi odpowiedź Jana Dylika na ankietę Komisji Geomorfologii Peryglacjalnej Międzynarodowej Unii Geograficznej, dotyczącą zdefiniowania pojęcia „peryglacjalny”. Autor analizuje różne kryteria interpretacji tego terminu – morfogenetyczne, klimatyczne i geograficzne – wskazując na potrzebę jego jednoznacznego i spójnego rozumienia. Dylik podkreśla, że zjawiska peryglacjalne wynikają z działania niskich temperatur i procesów zamarzania-rozmarzania, lecz nie są bezpośrednio związane z lodowcami. Proponuje rozumienie „peryglacjalnego” jako pojęcia przestrzennego, odnoszącego się do obszarów o specyficznym systemie procesów morfoklimatycznych.
